BEFORE YOUR RESIDENCY – ALIGNING EXPECTATIONS

The Workshops
Godsbanen houses six specialized workshops for wood, metal, ceramics, textiles and screen printing, laser, and graphics. On a daily basis, they accommodate everything from hobby production to professional artistic practice. Every day, our coordinators and volunteers assist all parts of the creative chain based on the principle of “help to self-help.”
If there are many users, there is less time for each individual. If there are few users, there is more time for each individual. In other words, you cannot expect undivided attention during opening hours.
It is important to understand that we serve many different users. In this respect, we are very different from the Danish Art Workshops (SVFK). However, we maintain close dialogue with SVFK and draw on their experience. SVFK is also represented on the jury.

What can I apply for?
As a professional artist, you can apply for either a production residency or a research residency. This means that your stay at Godsbanen can be part of the production for a specific artwork, exhibition, or commission—or part of a practice- and material-based research phase of an art project. The purpose of the project must be clearly stated in your application.

Am I insured?
No. Godsbanen does not provide insurance that covers you or your work. Any insurance you may need during your stay must be arranged by you.

Can several artists apply together?
Yes, several artists can apply together. This must be indicated in the application along with the group’s contact person. Only one joint application is uploaded, but CVs for all group members must be attached.

DURING YOUR RESIDENCY – ALIGNING EXPECTATIONS

Can I use the workspace 24/7?
Yes, you will receive a key card for Perron 3, giving you unlimited access to the 68 m² workspace during your residency. The space is located in the Production Corridor close to Godsbanen’s workshops.

Do I have to pay to use Godsbanen’s workshops?
No, you have free access during the agreed period within opening hours, with good opportunities for assistance.

Is there free access outside opening hours?
Yes, but only if approved by the workshop coordinators for safety reasons. Courses may occasionally occupy a workshop. If training is required and cannot be scheduled during regular hours, you will need to pay for this.

Can I get one-on-one professional guidance?
Yes. One-on-one guidance can be arranged with the relevant coordinator at a cost of DKK 500/hour. Purchasing this service guarantees uninterrupted assistance from our skilled staff.

Will I be introduced to the facilities?
Yes, you will be introduced by the relevant workshop coordinators. However, you are expected to have the necessary skills to work with the required techniques. If not, you can hire a professional to assist you.

Can I use multiple workshops during my stay?
Yes, that’s no problem.

Purchasing materials
Godsbanen’s workshops have material stocks where you can buy basic materials. If you wish to special-order materials from our suppliers, we are happy to assist for an administration fee of DKK 125. We recommend pooling your orders. You may also order from external suppliers, but you are responsible for compatibility with our tools and machines.

How much can I deviate from what I described in my application?
We understand that your project may evolve during the process. We also expect you to understand our internal planning needs. Major deviations may conflict with other priorities. We will do our best to help, but workshops are often busy. The more we can plan and align expectations in advance, the better we can support you.

May I drill into the walls of the production space?
No. The space must be used responsibly, and permanent changes are not allowed. You may use notice boards and darken the room. If you need coverings, you must arrange this yourself.

What about smoke, odor, and dust?
You must consider other users and neighbors when planning activities. For dusty work, tools must always be connected to a vacuum system—either the stationary one or a mobile vacuum—to avoid triggering the fire alarm. Activities producing smoke are prohibited for the same reason.

What about safety?
You can consult the workshop coordinator, especially before using machines for the first time. Alcohol or other intoxicants are strictly prohibited in the workshops for safety reasons.

Will my residency be promoted?
Yes, your project and process will be featured on Godsbanen’s website and social media. This aims to raise awareness of the residency program and provide insight into artistic processes. Open-door periods are considered a plus!

How about crediting?
You are required to credit Godsbanen and the Augustinus Foundation in exhibitions and marketing.
