Artist talk: Søren Nellemann: Bucha – Brooklyn

“Bucha – Brooklyn” – Søren Nellemann udstiller nye malerier og tegninger.

Udstillingen “Bucha-Brooklyn” er en kunsterisk repræsentation af nutidige menneskelige og samfundsmæssige kriser som har påvirket os alle: Krigen i Ukraine, massegravene og drabene på civile i Bucha og de sidste to års corona epidemi, med en refleksion over den aktuelle politiske tilstand og hvad der får os mennesker til at gøre som vi gør? Og hvordan vi reagerer overfor døden, brutalitet, uretfærdighed, ensomhed, isolation og angst. Flere værker blev inspireret af hans ophold i Brooklyn under COVID-19 pandemien. Søren bruger forskellige visuelle aspekter, som tegneseriefigurer, low-brow art, hyperrealisme til renæssance inspirerede visuelle udtryk i en moderne blanding af stilarter og billeder.

Søren Nellemann er uddannet på Det Kongelige Kunstakademi i Holland i år 2019. Samme år blev Søren udvalgt sammen med 30 andre kunstnere fra alle 11 hollandske kunstakademier, som bedste nye talent “Best Art Graduate-Sprouts Young Talent 2019” (kunstnerne blev vist på SBK Foundation for Visual Art Amsterdam (SBK Kunstuitleen & Galerie)).  Søren har også lavet flere skulpturer som ved Ølstykke Station, Smørum Kulturhus, Stenløse Rådhustorv og ved Egedal Rådhus. Han er tidligere uddannet som udviklingøkonom. Efter en karrierer med humanitært arbejde i nogle af de fattigste lande i verdenen valgte han at skifte spor.

Søren fortæller: ”På den ene side ønsker jeg – måske naivt –  at ændre tingene til det bedre gennem min kunst. Og på den anden side er jeg nødt til at udtrykke mine egne bekymringer og frygt gennem min kunst for dermed også at skabe en dialog med den besøgende.”

“Bucha – Brooklyn” – Søren Nellemann (www.sorenn.com and Instagram: soren_nellemann) exhibits new paintings and drawings in Godsbanen’s Foyer, from 11/7 2022 to 5/8 2022.

The exhibition “Bucha-Brooklyn” is an artistic representation of contemporary human and societal crises that have affected us all: the war in Ukraine, the mass graves and the killings of civilians in Bucha and the last two years’ corona pandemic with a reflection on the current political situation and what who makes us humans do as we do? And how we react to death, brutality, injustice, social isolation, loneliness, and anxiety. Several works were inspired by his stay in Brooklyn during the COVID-19 pandemic. Søren uses various visual aspects, such as cartoon characters, low-brow art, hyperrealism for renaissance inspired visual expressions in a modern mix of styles and images.

Søren graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the Netherlands in 2019. The same year, Søren Nellemann was selected together with 30 other artists from all 11 Dutch art academies as best new talent “Best Art Graduate-Sprouts Young Talent 2019” (the artists were shown at SBK Foundation for Visual Art Amsterdam (SBK Kunstuitleen & Galerie)).

Søren has also exhibited several sculptures, such as at Ølstykke Station, Smørum Kulturhus, Stenløse Rådhustorv and at Egedal Rådhus. He is previously trained as a development economist. After a career of humanitarian work in some of the poorest countries in the world, he chose to change career.

Søren says: “On the one hand, I want – perhaps naively – to change things for the better through my art. And on the other hand, I have to express my own worries and fears through my art with a hope to also create a dialogue with the visitor.”
